Izola -Tower St Maur Church

Tower of the St Maur Church, in Izola (Slovenia). This church is most visible one in Izola. The building stands at the top of the medieval island and gives the town its characteristic silhouette. The original church was built in 1356 and was smaller. The present church was erected in 1547 but it has been reconstructed significantly several times.

The last modifications were made in the early 20th century when it was given its present image. However, it preserved its Renaissance composition modified in the Baroque, and the historical elements. The St. Maur’s Church has been thoroughly restored in the period from 1980 to 1982. Its Baroque interior boasts ten altars, the Callid organ from 1796, and numerous paintings, the oldest among them from the 15th century.

The separate belfry was constructed in 1585 and is more than 30 meters high. It is made of Istrian stone and built in the Gothic style
